How You Know Your Kid Could Be A Coder

Have you wondered if your child would be a great coder? You are looking at coding as an option for your child but you aren’t sure it’s going to be the right fit for them. Completely understandable. Coding is a great career path and will mean a bright future for your child. Starting at an early age will help fuel that passion. Here are some indicators that your child will love and flourish by learning to code.

Loves STEM Subjects

The subjects that your child loves the best at school can be a big indicator if they will like coding. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Kids that love STEM subjects have a specific way of thinking and they approach problems in a straightforward manner. They tend to have more logical responses than an emotional response to different situations they find themselves in.

A Born Problem Solver

A lot of people get stressed out when they are faced with problems. But if your child stays calm and seems to enjoy solving puzzles, then they will LOVE coding. Children that love to solve difficult puzzles and won’t stop until they solve it are a perfect fit in the coding world. Coders are not afraid to tackle even the toughest projects and thrive when challenged.

Love Technology

Today’s world is all about technology. Computers are used as textbooks now and it seems every kid has a phone. A good sign your child may be enthusiastic about coding is if they love working on a computer playing games or using phone apps more than they enjoy things like sitting and watching TV. It might be that they have already shown an interest in coding, be it through school or just wondering how a program or game was designed.

Questions How Things Work

Since most coders love problems, it can be a sign that your child is a coder if they are always wanting to know how things work. They will question the world around them and be curious about how everyday things are built and how they work. Sometimes it may seem that they ask too many questions!

Love a Good Challenge

Children that love a challenge and aren’t afraid to work hard are going to be a great coder. They have the patience to keep working on a job and don’t get discouraged when it is harder than they thought it would be. They use the mistakes they make to help guide them in making the correct answers. They will take as long as they need to accomplish their goals and don’t give up when it starts getting tough.

Are OK Working On Their Own

Some kids need to be around others and some kids are just fine playing by themselves.  Future coders are the type that would rather play by themselves instead of in a group. They want to be able to focus on what they are doing and what they are exploring as they learn.  You may notice that your child is more introverted and this could be a sign that they will enjoy coding. They may like to work independently and then be around friends away from the task they are trying to accomplish.

While no one can predict the future, there are a few key things you can look for in your child to decide if coding could be right for them. It could be a skill they enjoy so not only can they have fun, but you have the confidence that they will have a solid career when they grow up.
